yAnA — you Are not Alone
A Public Information Initiative by Brisbane South District AA
The yAnA campaign is a concerted, long-term initiative by the Brisbane South District of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is designed to establish strong brand recognition and ensure that the message of recovery is visible across the daily life of our community. By using consistent, high-impact messaging in strategic local settings, we aim to create a "halo effect" that makes help easily identifiable whenever and wherever it is needed.
The Vision: Planting Seeds in the Heart of the Community
Recovery often begins long before a person walks through our doors. The yAnA campaign is built on the philosophy of attraction rather than promotion, focusing on "planting seeds" in the minds of the suffering alcoholic, their families, and the professionals who support them.
Unlike traditional large-scale advertising, we have chosen a flexible, programmatic platform that allows us to meet people where they live, work, and seek care.
A Multi-Channel & Hyper-Local Approach
We have integrated our messaging across a wide variety of platforms to ensure a unified presence throughout Brisbane South:
Strategic Urban Panels: Our digital billboards are placed in high-engagement areas, including bus shelters, roadside panels, and urban hubs, reaching people during their daily commutes and neighborhood walks.
Point-of-Care Displays: We have secured presence on electronic displays within doctor surgeries and pharmacies. This reaches individuals and families at critical moments when they are already focused on health and well-being. Combining this with the pamphlets and business cards provide healthcare providers with another resource for helping the still suffering alcoholic.
Corrections & Justice Outreach: We are actively supporting Area C Corrections by providing business cards and pamphlets for use within prison meetings. We see a significant opportunity to expand this into community corrections, parole, and probation locations, ensuring the message reaches those within the justice system.
Frontline Support: Business cards and flyers have been distributed to police stations and lockups, correctional facilities, doctors surgeries and placed on community notice boards. Feedback from police and frontline professionals has been extremely positive, providing them with a dignified tool to offer those in crisis.
Community Print Media: DL-sized card flyers for community notice boards and high-quality double-sided pamphlets. These feature the yAnA message on the front and the "Is AA For You?" 12 questions on the back.
Handheld Outreach: Business cards designed to match the billboard aesthetic exactly, providing a discreet and professional way to share the URL.
Our Branding Strategy: The "Magic" of the Message
There is a unique resonance in the phrase "you Are not Alone." It is a sentiment heard in countless shares within our rooms, and bringing it into the public square has created an immediate emotional connection for both alcoholics and professionals.
Soft Entry: The use of lowercase lettering (yAnA) creates a softer, more approachable entry point for those feeling overwhelmed.
The Red 'A's: The capital red As subtly but clearly associate the message with Alcoholics Anonymous, building brand recognition for those familiar with the fellowship.
Visual Familiarity: The white background with black and red lettering mirrors the banners found inside AA meeting rooms. This creates a "bridge of recognition"—when a newcomer eventually enters a meeting, they feel a sense of safety and familiarity.
The Single Source of Truth: We point everyone to aa.org.au. This allows individuals to investigate recovery privately and at their own pace without the pressure of a phone number or QR code.
Why This Matters Now
Membership trends across the fellowship have shown a need for increased visibility. To remain effective, AA must be a recognizable and trusted presence.
By utilizing a programmatic advertising platform and targeted physical distribution, we can ensure our message appears in the most relevant local contexts. This isn't just a one-off ad run; it is a long-term effort to establish AA as the reliable, modern solution for alcoholism in Brisbane South.
For Our Fellowship: Supporting the Mission
This campaign is a collective effort of the Brisbane South District groups. To maintain our presence in surgeries, pharmacies, corrections facilities, and on our streets, we have a committed district budget of $1,000 per month.
How Your Group Can Help
As per our 7th Tradition, AA is self-supporting through our own contributions. We do not accept outside donations, but we do encourage local groups to support this vital 12th-step work.
Group Contribution Plans: Consider including "District PI/CPC Initiatives" as a line item in your group’s regular contribution plan.
Member Contributions: Individual members can contribute through their groups to ensure the "yAnA" message remains visible across our district.
Active 12th-Step Work: Use the business cards and flyers in your own local outreach. The reaction from both professionals and the public has been overwhelmingly positive—the seeds we plant today are the newcomers of tomorrow.
Our Success Metrics
We define the success of the yAnA campaign by:
Increased Awareness: Ensuring families, police, and corrections professionals know AA is active in Brisbane South.
Web Traffic: Driving more individuals to the national website for resources.
Newcomers: Growing our fellowship and ensuring that no one has to suffer alone.
“I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible.”
